Overview

Staff engineer for testing and analytical projects funded by TTCI internal and external customers, including FRA, AAR, AAR member railroads, and commercial clients in the area of communications and train control.  

Responsibilities

Assignments for this position may include supporting technology research and development activities, organization, manipulation and analysis of data, modeling and simulation, interpretation of modeling results, development of systems engineering documentation, planning and conducting of laboratory and field testing, developing test requirements and test plans. and other similar tasks.  Duties may also include project management assignments.  The Engineer may be asked, depending on project requirements, to provide project-specific technical leadership to as many as five engineers and/or technicians.

The successful candidate is expected to participate in all phases of projects by assisting in proposal preparation, test planning, modeling, field implementation, test conduct, data analysis, presentations, and report writing

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering with strong background in Mathematics.
  • Exposure to projects involving development of practical solutions to unique open-ended problems.
  • Ability to apply logical and methodical approaches to solving engineering problems.
  • Ability to aggregate and analyze large complex data sets from diverse sources and structures.
  • Experience with numerical data analysis software packages, particularly Matlab.
  • Familiarity with relational databases and structured query language (SQL).
  • Familiarity with systems engineering concepts, particularly system definition process (requirements analysis, system concept definition, and requirements definition) and test methodology (test case definition, test design, etc.).
  • Familiarity with, or basic understanding of, risk/threat/hazard analysis.
  • Demonstrable computer skills, with experience using Microsoft Office products including Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
  • Must have excellent verbal and written communication along with demonstrable analytical and presentation skills.  Capable of preparing and delivering technical presentations to scientific groups. Strong interpersonal and communication skills with internal engineering teams and customers is a must.
  • Must be detailed-oriented with a focus on quality.
  • Must be capable of working independently and within a team of engineers. 
  • Must be able to read and interpret data and walk in an industrial and/or railroad environment, including uneven surfaces, such as ballast.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in Electrical Engineering (MS or PhD) and/or at least two years of experience.
  • Experience working with engineering projects related to PTC (Positive Train Control) systems.
  • Laboratory or field experience with common instrumentation and test equipment uses and limitations.
  • Proficient in testing methods, data collection and data analysis techniques and reporting.
  • Abilities in computer programming, computer-based analysis, computer-aided design, and computer-based modeling.
  • Experience with reliability, availability and maintainability (RAM) analysis concepts.
  • Experience in applying systems engineering techniques to develop system requirements and related documents.
  • Experience managing project budgets, schedules and technical resources.
